VFPCK is an ISO 9001 certified Organisation

VFPCK SEED PROCESSING PLANT, ALATHUR, PALAKKAD

This is a shining example of how Public – Private Participatory (P.P.P) models can attain excellent results. The Govt. of Kerala through the Public Sector Undertaking VFPCK represented by the officials and workers of the organization attached to this unit have nurtured and developed a harmonious and long standing relationship with the farmers of Chittur Taluk of Palakkad over the past 14 years to achieve what many thought impossible till recently. This unit is today widely acknowledged as the only centre capable of engaging in the commercial production of vegetable seeds in Kerala and operating in an economically viable manner.

In the past year this unit has expanded its scope of activities into diverse areas related to its core competency viz. production of quality planting material
  • VEGETABLE SEED UNIT

    • Vegetable seeds of 20 different types of High Yielding Crops suitable to the Agro Climatic conditions of the State are produced by 104 trained Seed Growers under the technical guidance of the Seed Technologist.

Uniqueness of VFPCK Seed Production Programme:
      • Seed Production without formal contract
      • Only commercial seed producer in Kerala
      • Lion share of vegetable seed production in public sector
      • Competitive price when compared to other PSU’s in Kerala
      • Exclusive full fledged Seed Testing Lab for Vegetables
      • Well trained trustworthy and efficient seed growers
      • Plays vital role in promoting high yielding varieties
      • In VFPCK Seeds are produced by farmers for the farmers
      • VFPCK acts as a facilitator to maintain genetic and physical purity of seeds

The unit has been able to propagate more than 200 tons of high yielding varieties since its inception in 1996 and thereby has played a major role in increasing the productivity of vegetable farmers of the State. Today it caters to upto 50% of the State’s demand of vegetable seeds in the organized sector.
    • TISSUE CULTURE LABORATORY

    • Virus infected suckers have been the biggest enemy of Banana Farmers for decades. Virus indexed tissue culture plantlets are VFPCK’s remedy to this long standing problem. A modern laboratory capable of producing upto 50000 Tissue Culture Plantlets per month has begun its commercial operations in the year 2009. Explant initiation, multiplication and rooting stages in culturing are carried out in the laboratory on the shoot buds of suckers collected from disease free High Yielding Varieties of Banana from different parts of the State. The plantlets are then shifted to the hardening chamber for acclimatization and development. Primary and secondary hardening operations takes a total of 90 days duration. The hardened plants are then ready for sale. Most popular varieties suitable to the state like Nendran, Robusta, Palayankodan, Poovan, Kadhali, etc., are propagated.
    • VEGETABLE SEEDLING UNIT

    • This is the age of Ready to Use products. Due to hectic schedules people do not have the time or inclination to wait for results. To overcome this problem the unit was formed with an intended target base of domestic first time cultivators. The initial difficult phase of raising a plant is done away with by undertaking this operation in the controlled environment at Alathur. Shade Net Nurseries having a total area of 5000 sq.ft. and capable of raising upto 2 lakh seedlings at a time form the backbone. Here seeds of popular vegetable crops mainly cool season varieties of Cabbage, Cauliflower, Beetroot, Carrot and Radish suitable to tropical climate are raised in pro-trays containing coir-pith compost for a period of 25 days before sales.
    • FRUIT PLANT PRODUCTION UNIT

    • Today there is a felt need for a credible agency in the State to supply authentic, quality fruit seedlings. VFPCK aspires to fill this vaccum

Grafted or layered seedlings are raised from genetically pure aged mother plants in the field of select farmers for a period of three months. These seedlings are then subjected to further hardening in the premises of the Seed Processing Plant before sales to the public. Seedlings of Mango, Sapota, Gooseberry and Guava are intended for supply.
    • SEED TRAINING INSTITUTE (S.T.I)

    • The mission of the Institute is to achieve the goal set by the Government of Kerala (i.e) a food secure State. The institute has the facilities for live demonstration models of the latest scientific practices in agriculture including permanent pandals, drip irrigation, fertigation, precession farming and cultivation under controlled environment. Further, visits to plots of seed growers, farmer level interaction and guided tours of the processing and quality testing facilities in the plant are key tools being utilized. Finally, this centre hopes to evolve as a common platform where policymakers, scientists, department officials and farmers together prepare the roadmap for “SUCCESS in AGRICULTURE”.
